First FA pickup draws laughs

After a slow start because the commissioner forgot to get the free agent market going, CDRL had its first official move: the Crusoes dropped Edgmer Escalona (P, COL) and acquired ARI pitcher Wade Miley for $7 (remember, owners, minimum bid is $5 and YOU MUST DROP AN ACTIVE PLAYER to pick up a free agent).

Reaction has not been real, um, smiley for Miley, who has two wins, including one as a starter, a 1.841 ERA and a WHIP of 0.9545.

Said one owner: “I had a $5 claim in — hope it doesn’t work out.”

Said another, with tongue firmly planted in cheek: “Wade Miley, huh? I’m sure he’s the long term answer in the rotation. Not like they have anyone else tearing it up in the minors or anything. Good thing you went to $7.”

Crusoes managing general partner Gary Robinson said he’s just trying to gather talent.

“Hey, I took a shot,” Robinson said. “If he stays in the rotation while Hudson is out and pitches well, it will be worth the expenditure.”

In the meantime, look for the Crusoes’ On the Block entry to include … Wade Miley.

Well if someone else had a claim in at $5 at least you didn’t go high for no reason. Still, I can’t see him staying in the rotation for too long with the D-Backs having both Trevor Bauer and Tyler Skaggs lurking.

    Those bums?

Obviously they are the future. But the D-Backs would love to keep them down on the farm until June for contract purposes.

    We’ll see how it goes.

Nice pickup. I’d just as soon see Bauer stay in the minors all year so I could re-slot him.
