Kings rebuild their pitching staff, against their will

A joke:

Gary: Hey, Kerry, I’ve got bad news and good news for you.

Kerry: Let’s hear the bad news first.

Gary: The Cubs traded Ryan Dempster to … the Rangers.

Kerry: And there’s good news too?

Gary: Well, you now have the best pitching staff in AALRP.

HAR!

Actually, it’s past the funny stage. And we’re sure Kerry would agree. Kerry? KERRY? OK, somebody get Kerry off the ledge and lock the window behind him.

Today was the final straw for the beleaguered Memphis Kings’ pitching staff. After J.A. Happ was traded to the Blue Jays, after Brett Myers was traded to the White Sox, after Anibal Sanchez was traded to the Tigers, and after Zack Greinke was traded to the Angels, the coup de grace came today. Ryan Dempster, whose apparent only suitors were the Dodgers, was sent to the Rangers.

So half of the Kings’ 10 active pitchers have been dealt to the American League and thus, out of Kerry’s grasp.

(Bloggus interruptus: For those of you who didn’t play and didn’t get the joke, AALRP was the American League league some of us played in. It folded before the 2012 season because we fell to about 8 teams.)

At one point today, as the trade deadline approached and the trade of Dempster seemed imminent, Kerry e-mailed that if it happened, he “might retire.”

Well, we all know him better than that. In fact, this may be the Kings’ best player management job yet. He still has some tricks up his defending champion sleeves. Let’s see how it plays out.
